How Our Pure MSM Organic Sulfur Product Made

In nature, MSM Organic Sulfur occurs in many foods (think eggs, milk and tomatoes), but in very insignificant amounts; limiting our ability to intake an appropriate amount of sulfur. Additionally, research has found that the sulfate reserve in humans is among the smallest of animal species and may be depleted by a low protein diet and acetaminophen (also called Tylenol©) intake. Thus, to achieve the adequate levels of concentrated sulfur needed to increase the likelihood of experiencing the benefits listed above, MSM Organic Sulfur is produced using commercial methods to create an identical match to that of MSM Organic Sulfur found in nature.

More technically – MSM Organic Sulfur is created reacting two products, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which creates a molecule (MSM) that configures in only one way. Simple enough, right (haha)? Upon reaction, MSM Organic Sulfur (scientifically called methylsulfonylmethane) is created. Furthermore, all of the hydrogen peroxide is consumed and water is created as a by-product of the reaction.

Our product is then sent through a distillation process to remove the water by-product and any contaminants. This is where many MSM Organic Sulfur products can differ – the purification process. Purification is typically completed using a distillation or crystallization process. Purification through distillation is much more rigorous and expensive, but results in a higher purity end product, as it leads to removal of much higher levels of contaminants. To ensure we offer the best product we can, our MSM undergoes a quadruple distillation process, while other companies may use a single or double process. The process of distillation, like that of which our product at No Boundaries has undergone, is the preferred method since crystallization can result in impure solvents or contamination. After purification in the distillation process, our product is sent through a prilling chamber to form the crystals that our MSM powder is comprised of.

The end product then undergoes rigorous testing by an outside business, known as third-party testing, to make sure our product meets our high quality standards. If it doesn't meet our specifications, the product is destroyed. If the product passes our quality assurance testing, it's forwarded for packaging in our cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) facility.  We take safety seriously, and all of our facilities have meet stringent certification levels making sure our product is top notch when it reaches our customers. No Boundaries Health and Wellness MSM Powder is a 99.9% pure product which is confirmed through independent testing of every single product batch.

MSM Organic Sulfur Classification, Testing and Regulation

MSM Organic Sulfur is classified as a dietary supplement and regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). The FDA has the right to recall or ban dietary supplements that are found to be unsafe; however, our MSM Organic Sulfur  has been classified as “generally recognized as safe,” a designation reserved for few products. Moreover, the FDA requires that all dietary supplements are manufactured in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) using documentation and consistent methods (thankfully, ours is!). More information about FDA regulations can be found within the FDA website.

Other current production standards for MSM Organic Sulfur were created by the AOAC International, an independent, NIH-sponsored, FDA-endorsed international community of chemists. The AOAC International has created standards and tests to ensure that manufacturers use the same types of methods and tools for testing, so that the consumer can uniformly compare products.

Important tests for comparison include:

  • High resolution gas chromatography (“HRGC”) – establishes the volatile purity of organic sulfur (“volatile” impurities referring to those impurities that evaporate easily).
  • Melting point – helps to reveal non-volatile purities which cannot be determined by HRGC. This testing is important in conjunction with the HRGC testing to determine that the organic sulfur you are consuming is also pure from non-volatility impurities (“non-volatile” referring to a substance that does not readily evaporate into a gas under existing conditions).
  • Karl Fischer Titration Method (“KFT”) – Pure organic sulfur should be extremely dry, with a water content of less than 0.1%.
  • Metals Testing - heavy metals; Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead, as well as the metal Aluminum. Additionally, as water is an integral part of the production process, guidelines regarding water supply are very important. Thus, it is worth noting that foreign MSM production facilities may be located in areas where local water supplies do not meet the more stringent U.S. Federal guidelines for organic and inorganic volatiles, heavy metals, and other contaminants, making heavy metal testing essential (We note that our product is made in the U.S).
  • Microbiological Testing - for aerobic bacteria, total coliforms, and yeast and molds. Again, this testing can be affected by water contamination. Poor water quality can lead to coliform and bacterial contamination. Too much moisture in the product can lead to yeast and mold contamination.

Knowing how important purity is to the overall success of intake regarding MSM Organic Sulfur, we provide a product subject to the above testing. No Boundaries Health and Wellness MSM Organic Sulfur is subjected to the aforementioned testing, which is then confirmed through independent, third-party testing to be 99.99% pure MSM Organic Sulfur. Additionally, our MSM Organic Sulfur is manufactured in a facility that meets FDA’s proposed Good Manufacturing Practices.  Therefore, you can have confidence you are getting the purest product on the market, made right in the USA under the most stringent guidelines.
