Rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition usually affecting the face, causes redness and sometimes even small pus-filled bumps. If left untreated, it usually worsens with time. Many people living with rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) don't even know that have it (over 16 million Americans are affected). It can affect anyone of any age, but seems to be most prevalent in middle-aged females. It is classified into four different subgroups, three affecting the skin and one affecting the eyes. Many of those who live with rosacea experience an inflammation of the skin with associated facial burning, stinging, and/or itching. Without treatment a thickening of the skin is common, and in addition to acne like bumps, a nose deformation can occur. Unfortunately, this disorder has no discovered cure at this time, and often depends on routine care to keep flare ups and advancements at a minimum.
The National Rosacea Society has surveyed those affected by rosacea and the results are quite startling. For example, greater than 90% of those surveyed stated that their rosacea had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, 41% reported that they have avoided social or public events due to it. 88% felt that their disorder had negatively affected their professional interactions and 51% even reported missing work at some point as a result of their rosacea.
