This is basic movement is often the first part of an addition movement, like in the Bridge exercise. This movement gives quick feedback as to how well a person can control their buttock musculature. Oftentimes this musculature weakens with prolonged periods of sitting, or slow paced walking (usually with a loss of buttock muscle mass - picture folks whose pants slip down in the back). Cramping of the muscles on the back of the thigh, or throughout the lower leg, may be a sign that the buttock muscles are not working correctly and those muscles are being overworked. This easy exercise can be done anywhere to improve coordination and lay the foundation of strengthening.
